Eigen Insect

Generative Design

Eigen insect is a computational synthesis of 35 vector drawings of insects retrieved from the NeuBau Welt library. The drawings are combined using principal component analysis algorithm (PCA) where an image is produced from the combination of a set of images. PCA is mostly used as a tool in exploratory data analysis and for making predictive models. In this work we use PCA as generative design tool to for shape exploration by reshuffling the contents of a vector library. We use only the first few principal components (image brightness) to reduce the dimensionality of the data and we map this onto the z axis to create depth. The generated geometry is physicallized using 3d printing technologies

They were created by designer Stefan Gandl and his Neubau team. Reminiscent of a digital Letraset, “Neubau Welt” contains everything any designer could possibly need but couldn’t find. Unlike ClipArt, the smorgasbord of objects are editable and can be enlarged indefinitely.
