Psychogeography Workshop/Onassis Cultural Foundation

Psychogeography Workshop/Onassis Cultural Foundation

Topotheque Design Studio in collaboration with writer and flaneur C. Chryssopoulos conducted a Psychogeography Workshop for high school students under the auspices of Onassis Cultural Foundation, Athens. The 7-day workshop (28/4-3/5), which took place in Ioannina, Greece, introduced to the students the notions of Psychogeography and Dérive and aimed to arise their consciousness and understanding of the built environment.

Through a drift card game, the workshop helped the students to get lost in their home town by guiding them on a walk using randomly assembled instructions.
Each instruction asked them to move in a specific direction and look for something normally hidden or unnoticed in their everyday experiences, especially texts and objects.
As they came across these hidden or unnoticed things, they were asked to document them with the camera, creating a photographic record of their walk. This record was then turned into collages and short poems, which the students pasted back to the city. The whole concept referred to the way that the poet K. Kavafis was experiencing his home town Alexandria and how this perception was reflected in his body of work.
Special thanks goes to Theodore Chiotis for his support throughout the workshop and the students of Pedini High School, who took part.
